After Loving V. Virginia Ruling

After the Ruling

After the ruling, the Lovings were allowed to return to Virginia and live as a husband and wife.

In 1975, a drunk driver ran into them, killing Richard and injuring Mildred.

Before the Loving case, they couldn't live in Virginia together, but the court ruling changed this. Interracial couples could live in Virginia without the law separating them anymore.

"I have previously expressed the belief that 'it is simply not possible for a state law to be valid under our Constitution which makes the criminality of an act depend upon the race of the actor.' "

~Justice Potter Stewart, 1967
